CSA Preface<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the third edition of CAN\/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-2-28, Household and similar electrical appliances \u2014 Safety \u2014 Part 2-28: Particular requirements for sewing machines<\/em>, which is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the identically titled IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Standard 60335-2-28 (edition 4:2002 consolidated with Amendment 1:2008). It supersedes the previous edition published in 2001 as CAN\/CSA-E60335-2-28 (adopted IEC 335-2-28:1994), and it replaces the requirements for sewing machines found in CSA C22.2 No. 68-09, Motor-operated appliances (household and commercial). CSA C22.2 No. 68 continues to apply to other motor-operated appliances. This Standard is one in a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.<\/p>\n

This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with CAN\/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-1:11, Safety of household and similar appliances \u2014 Part 1: General requirements (adopted IEC 60335-1:2001+A1:2004 +A2:2006, with Canadian deviations).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric sewing machines for household and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Overlock machines and electrical sets are within the scope of the standard.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Appliances not intended for normal household use, but that nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as sewing machines intended to be used by laymen in shops and in light industry, are within the scope of this standard.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2013 persons (including children) whose<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2022 physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2022 lack of experience and knowledge<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2013 children playing with the appliance.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

NOTE 101 Attention is drawn to the fact that<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2013 for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2013 in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.<\/p>\n

\u2013 appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
