Stiffness Data for Finite Element Calculations. Equivalent Stiffness Factors for Shear Webs

ESDU 84042 provides the equivalent stiffnesses of shear webs containing such features as holes, castellated edges, corrugations and swages. Also provided are estimates of the effective area of the shear web that works with the edge members. Each feature is treated separately and equations are given for their combined effect when two or more are present. The data are provided so that the shear web may be represented as one solid web and the edge members as single constant-area members in finite element calculations designed to determine the load distribution in the whole structure. The number of elements required to model a shear web is thus considerably reduced without loss of accuracy. A worked example involving a web with castellations and lightening holes illustrates the use of the data.
