CSA C22.2 NO. 18.2-06 (R2016):2006 Edition

Preface

This is the first edition of CSA C22.2 No. 18.2, Nonmetallic outlet boxes, part of a series of Standards issued by the Canadian Standards Association under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. This edition of CSA C22.2 No. 18.2 supersedes the requirements of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 18-98, Outlet Boxes, Conduit Boxes, Fittings, and Associated Hardware, for products covered in this Standard, as indicated in the Scope of this Standard.

Scope

1.1

This Standard applies to the following products designed to be employed in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I:

a) nonmetallic outlet boxes, conduit, concrete, floor, and pull boxes that do not exceed 1640 mL in volume;

b) nonmetallic device boxes (with or without integral fittings) that do not exceed 1640 mL in volume, except for multiple-gang boxes where each single-gang section does not exceed 1640 mL in volume; and

c) extension rings, closure plugs, and outlet box covers.

1.2

This Standard also applies to requirements for metallic and nonmetallic box extenders intended for use with metallic or nonmetallic outlet boxes for wall or ceiling applications for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. See Annex A.

1.3

This Standard does not apply to rigid PVC boxes covered in CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 85.

1.4

This Standard does not apply to cover plates for flush devices covered in CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 42.1.

1.5

This Standard does not apply to outlet boxes or outlet box covers for use in hazardous locations.

1.6

The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. Any values given in yard/pound units, either in parentheses following the SI unit or as an additional column in a table, are for information only.

1.7

In CSA Standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and can is used to express possibility or capability.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a n ote accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
